Mel Gibson’s upcoming sequel to *The Passion of the Christ* will focus on the events surrounding Jesus’ resurrection — including the mysterious three days between His crucifixion and return.
According to Gibson, *The Resurrection of the Christ* will go beyond the Gospel scenes usually shown in films and explore what many Christian traditions call “The Harrowing of Hell,” the belief that Jesus descended into the underworld after His death.
“In order to tell the story properly you have to start with the fall of the angels,” Gibson said. “You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol.”
The two-part film is expected to depict spiritual warfare, Satan, fallen angels, and Jesus’ victory over death. Gibson described the project as moving into “another realm,” combining Biblical events with supernatural elements connected to Christ’s resurrection.
The story will also cover the 40 days Jesus remained on Earth after rising from the dead before ascending into Heaven.
Part One is scheduled for release in May 2027, followed by Part Two in May 2028.
