Metaxas Challenges Church on Faith and Obedience

Eric Metaxas weighed in on the recent confession by Philip Yancey, making a pointed theological challenge to the American church.

Metaxas said that when Yancey wrote his actions “defied everything that I believe about marriage,” the deeper issue may be that our behavior reveals what we truly believe. He warned that Christians often emphasize faith and grace while forgetting that how we live is evidence of real belief.

Citing Scripture, Metaxas reminded believers that “faith without works is dead,” arguing that claiming belief while living in contradiction shows faith has not fully taken root. While rejecting works-based salvation, he stressed that obedience still matters to God and that the church has downplayed moral accountability for too long.

Metaxas said this tension — grace that transforms lives, not just words, and called on American Christians to recover a faith that is visible in how we live, not just what we say.
