Mountaineers Pitcher Chansen Cole Finds Identity Beyond Baseball

West Virginia Mountaineers pitcher Chansen Cole says baseball once defined his entire life, but his faith in Jesus has changed how he handles pressure, success, and the future.

“In high school, baseball was everything for me,” Cole shared on The Walk podcast. “To say my identity was in baseball would be an understatement. My identity was fully in baseball, nothing else.”

That began to change through injury, college transitions, and a deeper walk with Christ. Cole said his peace no longer depends on whether he plays well or not.

“Whether I’m playing or not, I was able to go home each night and lay my head on the pillow with the fact that I’m a son of God, and nothing is ever going to be better than that,” he said.

Cole also shared a simple prayer he says after every national anthem before taking the mound: “Thank you, Jesus. I’m grateful for this opportunity. And I love you.”

After a strong postseason performance, including six innings with 10 strikeouts, Cole says his focus remains bigger than baseball. For him, the mound is not where he proves his worth, but where he gets another opportunity to glorify God.
