Lawmakers including Mike Johnson and Ted Cruz joined Christians from across the nation at the Museum of the Bible for the 2026 National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance, hosted by the Family Research Council.
The four-hour event centered on repentance, spiritual renewal, and America’s Christian heritage as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary. Johnson emphasized that the United States’ freedom and success are rooted in its biblical foundation, warning that those liberties cannot be taken for granted. Quoting historical voices and Scripture, he urged Americans to remain faithful and to defend and restore the country’s moral and spiritual foundations.
Cruz echoed the call to repentance, praying that God would “heal this land” amid growing anger and political division. He referenced 2 Chronicles 7:14 and America’s historic vision as a “shining city on a hill,” asking for unity and a new spiritual awakening.
Throughout the gathering, representatives from all 50 states prayed over their states and the nation. Speakers also highlighted the rising persecution of Christians worldwide. Former missionary Andrew Brunson and others warned that hostility toward believers is increasing not only in traditionally hostile regions but also in Western nations, urging American Christians to use their freedom and influence to advocate for those suffering for their faith.
