Pastor Visits Jailed Gateway Church Founder Robert Morris, Speaks on Mercy

Pastor Landon Schott says he recently visited jailed Gateway Church founder Robert Morris and had what he called a “deeply personal” moment. Morris is serving six months in an Oklahoma jail after pleading guilty to child sex abuse charges from the 1980s.

Schott said that on the day Morris went to jail, God told him, “I have forgiven him.” He later realized Morris is expected to be released around Easter week — “the week we celebrate the Lamb… the cross… the resurrection” — adding, “You cannot script that.” In his words, “mercy triumphs over judgment,” and “the grace of God is not selective.”

Morris had initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea and accepted a deal that includes jail time and probation. His attorney said he “accepted responsibility for his conduct” and wanted to bring the case to an end for everyone involved.
