On the fifth anniversary of January 6, former Vice President Mike Pence reflected on what he called both a “tragic day” and a defining moment for American democracy — emphasizing faith, duty, and God’s grace.
Speaking about the events surrounding the U.S. Capitol, Pence honored “the men and women in uniform — the true heroes that day,” crediting their courage and sacrifice for restoring order.
He said he remains convinced that “by God’s grace, I did my duty to see to the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution.”
While acknowledging the pain and division of January 6, Pence pointed to what followed as a powerful testament to democratic resolve. After violence was quelled, “leaders in both chambers in both political parties reconvened the very same day and finished democracy’s work under the Constitution,” he said, calling it a moment when tragedy became “a triumph of freedom.”
Pence also expressed deep gratitude for the encouragement he has received in the years since, thanking “countless Americans of every background” who reached out with words of support.
He emphasized the unifying role of foundational principles, saying, “The Constitution is the common ground on which we stand.” In a season of national division, Pence said he believes that shared ground can still lead to hope, adding that “America’s best days are yet to come.”
