Texas Evangelicals Expected to Back GOP Runoff Winner

Pastor Robert Jeffress says Evangelical voters in Texas will likely unite behind whichever Republican wins next week’s Senate runoff, despite polls showing Democrat James Talarico running competitively.

Jeffress spoke after Donald Trump endorsed Ken Paxton over Sen. John Cornyn in the May 26 Republican runoff. While Jeffress serves on Cornyn’s Faith Advisory Council, he stressed he is not endorsing either candidate.

Still, Jeffress said many conservative Christians are concerned about Talarico’s progressive positions on gender and sexuality. “People are diversified in their opinion of President Trump’s endorsement of Paxton,” he said, “but they seem unified in the belief that James [Talarico] cannot be the next senator from Texas.”

Jeffress encouraged Christians to vote based on “biblical values,” while remembering that “no candidate is perfect.” He also urged believers to respect fellow Christians who may disagree politically.
