Albert Mohler has officially brought his Truth and Unity Amendment before the Southern Baptist Convention, seeking to clarify that cooperating SBC churches may not affirm, appoint, or endorse a woman serving as a pastor, elder, or overseer.
Speaking during the first session of the 2026 SBC Annual Meeting, Mohler proposed language stating that a church must not endorse “a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer, specifically preaching to the assembled congregation.” The motion received multiple seconds before messengers were set to decide whether it would be scheduled for debate and consideration this year.
The proposal revives one of the SBC’s most debated issues after a similar amendment passed in 2023 but failed to receive the required two-thirds vote in 2024. If approved, a constitutional change would still need two-thirds support at two consecutive annual meetings.
