A 66-year-old pastor in England is at the center of a growing free speech controversy after he was arrested in public while preaching about Jesus. Video of Pastor Steve Maile being handcuffed in Watford has now spread widely, showing him shouting, “I am a preacher of the gospel,” and continuing to call people to repent and believe in Christ even as police led him away.
Maile now faces hate speech charges after criticizing aspects of Islam during his street preaching. He says his message was not hate, but compassion, because he was urging people to come to Jesus. He also claims officers put him in double handcuffs so tight that he later needed a doctor, and said one officer mocked the name of Jesus while forcing him into the police vehicle.
After spending 12 hours in custody, Maile was released on bail and is due back in court in July. But far from backing down, he says even prison would not silence him.
