Viral Warning on Worship Music Gains New Attention

In 2021, Tennessee worship leader Mackenzie Morgan went viral after warning churches against using music from Hillsong Church, Elevation Church, and Bethel Church. She argued that worship songs are not theologically neutral and that churches financially support these ministries through licensing fees.

“I can no longer stay silent,” Morgan wrote, urging Christians to evaluate worship music by Scripture rather than popularity. She expressed concerns about teachings associated with leaders such as Steve Furtick and the broader influence of Hillsong and Bethel.

In the years that followed, Hillsong faced major scandals, including the dismissal of Carl Lentz, the resignation of founder Brian Houston, numerous church closures, and allegations of misconduct and abuse. The article argues these events gave new weight to Morgan’s warnings.

Morgan later launched the “Godly Whistleblower” podcast, where she analyzes worship songs, church movements, and theological trends. She continues to encourage churches to examine both lyrics and the ministries behind the music.
